ARCTIC INTELLIGENCE OBSERVATORY: SOCINT as a protagonist in the analysis of POLAR DYNAMICS
Pioneering initiative by the Italian Society of Intelligence to explore one of the most strategic areas of the planet.
In a context of growing tactical and geopolitical importance in the Arctic, the SOCINT Italian Society of Intelligence has established the Intelligence Observatory to explore the complex dynamics of the polar region.
The Arctic, a natural barrier that has maintained order and balance in international relations, is undergoing significant changes due to climate variations and the increasing interest of multiple actors.
The Observatory aims to analyze these changes with a holistic and intelligence-driven approach, focusing on aspects such as security, economy, environment and geopolitics.
Admiral Ferdinando Sanfelice Di Monteforte assumes the presidency of the Observatory, with Emanuela Somalvico as the director. The Scientific Committee includes Gianluca Frinchillucci, director of the “Silvio Zavatti” Polar Geographic Institute; Agata Lavorio, researcher at the University of Milan; Marzio G. Mian, journalist and co-founder of the non-profit organization “The Arctic Times Project” based in the USA; Antonio Nicaso, university professor and expert in international organized crime; Paolo Quattrocchi, president of the “Italy-Canada” Study Center; Marco Santarelli, information networks analyst and international information security; Marco Volpe, Visiting Researcher at the Arctic Center in Rovaniemi and member of the Arctic Observatory.
Among the main objectives of the Observatory is the protection of national interests in the Arctic, including safeguarding business activities in the region, monitoring critical subsea infrastructures, and preventing organized crime linked to new economic opportunities.
Throughout the year, the Observatory will organize conferences and in-depth initiatives, involving institutions, experts, and international partners. Topics will range from the perspectives of Italian intelligence in the Arctic to new Arctic routes and the emerging role of the Mediterranean. As our country has played the role of an “observer” in the Arctic Council since 2013, it positions itself at the center of the discussion and analysis of a region increasingly crucial to international balances.
